Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus Combines Academics,
Athletics and the Arts at its New Summer Camp

Open Houses for Families with Children Ages 3-12 on May 22 and June 12;
First Camp Session Begins July 6

This July and August, Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus will host its first annual summer camp for kids ages 3-12. With a focus on creativity, academics and athletics, the 2010 Summer Camp, which is part of the Campus’ Brooklyn Children’s Academy, will stimulate and challenge young minds and bodies during three two-week sessions starting Tuesday, July 6.

Campers will experience hands-on learning in a healthy, active and secure environment. Activities will be held in facilities and outdoor spaces across the 11-acre, magnificently landscaped, gated campus, including the $45-million Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center.

The Campus will conduct two open house events. The first open house will take place on Saturday, May 22, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The last open house is Saturday, June 12, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Campus’ Pratt Building, Rooms 120 and 121. Parents and children are encouraged to bring a bathing suit and swim cap to experience the pool during the open house. The Brooklyn Campus is located at the corner of Flatbush Avenue Extension and DeKalb Avenue.

“We have a number of fun and exciting programs for children” Brooklyn Campus Provost Gale Stevens Haynes said. “The summer camp is another way to share our resources with members of the community. Our teachers and staff cannot wait for the camp to begin!”

Exciting academic workshops, including classes in game development, robotics, basic science and languages, will be complemented by creative programs such as “Comics for Kids” and “Project Runway for Kids” as well as athletic activities like swimming, soccer, baseball, softball and basketball. Parents also have the option of immersing their children in English, Spanish or Hebrew language courses. Each camper is supervised at all times by camp counselors as well as adult teachers and specialists.

Sessions run Monday through Friday in two-week increments. Registration for one, two or all three sessions is available. Session I runs July 6-16; Session II is July 26-August 6; and Session III is August 9-20. The hours for young campers, who will be grouped by age (3-4 and 5-6), are 9 a.m.-noon. Tuition for the young campers is $500 per session.

The hours for campers ages 7-12 are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuition for the older children is $990 per session. Discounts are available for siblings of registered campers. For more information on the camp schedule and online registration, please visit or call (718) 488-1362.
