Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the Psychology Department web page of Long Island University (LIU)’s Brooklyn campus! Located in downtown Brooklyn, just over the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, LIU provides access to a wealth of ethnic diversity, as well as all of the substantial cultural, scientific, medical and academic assets found in New York City. It provides an excellent location, as well as outstanding educational opportunities.

The Psychology department offers three programs of academic study-- an undergraduate program leading to the B.A., and two graduate degree programs: an M.A. in Psychology and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (APA accredited program). Our excellent faculty bring substantial clinical and research experience to the department and are committed to teaching and mentoring student research.

Our faculty members are actively engaged in psychological research, and as you will see in browsing our research interests and projects have ongoing research in areas that include racial stereotypes and prejudice, academic achievement, effects of exposure to community violence, post-traumatic stress disorder, cultural issues in psychotherapy, and cross-cultural issues with couples. Other areas include implicit cognition, group methods of treatment, development of therapeutic relationships, social judgment processes, cognitive development, annihilation anxiety, subliminal perception, and neuropsychological issues. The Intercultural Institute on Human Development and Aging, under the direction of Dr. Carol Magai, Dean of Research, is also affiliated with the department and focuses on a wide range of psychological issues related to ethnicity and health.

Our students, both undergraduates and graduates, therefore have ample opportunities for research training and experience. Students also get to choose from a wide range of courses to satisfy the requirements for their programs.

I hope you enjoy learning more about our department in these pages.
