The LIU Colloquia Series
2003-04 explores the ongoing transformation of theory, research,
and clinical practice in psychoanalysis.
The series opens with a paper by Dr. Arnold Richards in which he
traces the course of the “politics of exclusion” of
the American Psychoanalytic Association and the impact that an internet
listserv discussion among members is having in effecting change
in this historical organization.
Psychoanalysis has become a rubric under which diverse theories
and practices exist, at times discordantly. Dr. Leon Hoffman discusses
two major theories, critical relational theory and conflict theory,
to address the heart of current controversies between these two
essential approaches.
Dr. Wendy Olesker will present a treatment of a child that will
not only illustrate how to work with this population but will also
shed light on our theories of development and on our work with adults.
Dr. Rafael Javier’s work addresses vital cultural issues
within the framework of psychoanalytic theory confronting harmful
misconceptions about work with cultural minorities while challenging
the sanctity of psychoanalysis.
The work of Dr. Wilma Bucci is internationally known for its advancement
of psychoanalytic process research. In her Multiple Code Theory,
she has proposed a model of psychological organization that is rooted
in cognitive science and psychoanalysis, while challenging some
basic assumptions of both disciplines. Dr. Bucci will discuss her
own research and trace the history of process research over six
generations.
Dr. Beatrice Beebe has established a critically important research
program that explores the decisive impact of the mother/child relationship
on the development of self-regulation and personality. She will
describe her research on mother-infant distress and self and other
regulation.
The last colloquium of the year is reserved for the discussion
of a psychotherapy case by a distinguished scholar. It is hard to
imagine a more fitting way to conclude a lecture series on the transformation
of psychoanalysis than with the work of Dr. Charles Brenner. Dr.
Brenner is one of the pre-eminent psychoanalytic scholars of our
time whose writings are considered by many to have had the single
most significant impact on the development of Freudian psychoanalytic
theory and technique. On this occasion we have the honor of having
Dr. Brenner accept our invitation to speak
on sado-masochism as compromise formation
in response to a clinical case material to be presented by one of
our doctoral students.
The 2003- 2004 Colloquia Series promises to be a forum for stimulating
debate and dialogue, that attests to the ongoing vitality of psychoanalysis
as a field of study, research and practice.
