WHO
WE ARE
The International Drug Information Center (IDIC) of the Arnold & Marie Schwartz
College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences of Long Island University is a premier
drug information center providing health care professionals with up-to-date,
accurate, and unbiased drug information. Since its inception in 1973 the IDIC
has provided drug information to a varied client base including pharmacists,
physicians, nurses and related health care professionals, pharmaceutical companies,
attorneys, law enforcement agencies, pharmacy benefit managers, poison control
centers, and other institutional and organizational clientele.
OUR MISSION
The IDIC uses its resources to further its mission
of service, education, and research. This mission
is carried out through the provision of current,
unbiased, and accurate drug information to subscribing
health care professionals, faculty members of the
Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy
and Health Sciences, and preceptors affiliated with
the College; by providing students with hands-on
experience applying the systematic approach to answering
drug information requests so that they become “information
literate”; and through the promotion and participation
in research in the field of drug information.
WHAT WE DO
The IDIC is designed to answer drug information questions
from health care professionals only. Our comprehensive
library of resources includes numerous medical and
pharmacy journals, specialized texts, commercial
electronic databases, and our own in-house database.
This vast collection allows us to fulfill varied
requests for drug information. Typical drug information
inquiries may encompass any of the following categories:
- Adverse reactions and side effects
- Alternative medicines
- Compounding
- Contraindications
- Drug dosage and administration
- Drug availability
- Drug efficacy
- Drug interactions
- Drug use in pregnancy and breast feeding
- Drugs in the pipeline
- Identification of foreign products
- Identification of capsules/tablets
- IV compatibility and stability
- Pharmacokinetics
- Pharmacology
- Therapeutic comparisons
- Therapeutic use
- Toxicity
Comprehensive literature searches,
drug evaluations, and other related projects are available
as a special service upon request and through consultation
with IDIC staff. Questions involving
litigation will not be answered by the IDIC; however
we may offer a referral to a consultant.
Since education is one of our three major goals, the
IDIC serves as a site for the required drug information
clerkship in the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Students
in their last year of training are heavily involved
in answering drug information requests. All questions
are reviewed by our faculty and staff before questions
are completed and answers are provided. Verbal and/or
written responses (including references if appropriate)
are supplied promptly. Every attempt is made to answer
questions in a timely manner. A quality assurance program
is in place to ensure that answers to questions are
of the highest quality. We are continuously working
to improve our service.
The faculty
and staff of the IDIC also promote and regularly
contribute to the body of scientific literature as
it relates specifically to the field of drug information
and globally to clinical pharmacy practice.
