Counselor-Student Relationship

Counselor Responsibilities

  1. Assist students with exploring areas of study in order to select appropriate majors and minors.
  2. Assist students with course scheduling and understanding degree progress.
  3. Actively listen to students’ questions and concerns and provide information and support as needed.
  4. Assist students with exploring career and professional options, including Coop, Work Study, Internship and personal professional development.
  5. Explain LIU policies and procedures, academic programs, core curriculum and major requirements, and student services.
  6. Refer students to campus services (Financial Services, Academic Reinforcement Center, etc.), organizations, and faculty and staff members as needed to enhance academic performance and overall college experience.
  7. Provide accurate and relevant information about LIU as it becomes available.
  8. Assist students in developing decision-making skills, self-evaluation skills, and educational action plans.
  9. Work collaboratively with students to develop alternative action plans when necessary.
  10. Demonstrate to students how to access and utilize the advising resources listed above.
  11. Utilize all means of communication to continually provide students with important LIU information.
  12. Provide a respectful and supportive atmosphere.
  13. Maintain counselor-advisee confidentiality (see below).

Student Responsibilities

  1. Gather information about academic programs.
  2. Learn and adhere to academic policies and procedures.
  3. Meet with a counselor at least once a semester to discuss degree progress, possible major/minor alternatives, and construct an appropriate academic plan.
  4. Prepare for advising appointments by gathering accurate information and developing relevant questions and/or discussion topics.
  5. Accept responsibility for decisions and actions.
  6. Keep track of your academic progress.
  7. Be courteous and plan ahead: schedule appointments early and cancel or reschedule appointments in advance and only if necessary.
  8. Utilize campus services and programs as appropriate for academic and personal development.
  9. Follow-up on advisor referrals (tutoring services, etc.) and keep advisors informed of the outcomes of referrals.
  10. Regularly use the advising resources listed above.
  11. Keep contact information up-to-date and read all official LIU correspondences.
  12. Be open to developing and clarifying academic goals.
