The LIU-Brooklyn Campus Music Department “Brooklyn’s Finest Music Institution”

Creative instrumental and vocal jazz studies are hallmarks of the LIU-Brooklyn Campus Music Department. Established over 25 years ago, and one of the first schools in the NYC area to offer a degree in jazz studies, our unique program offers students an invaluable opportunity to study with top professionals from the New York City area and beyond.

The LIU-Brooklyn Campus offers the following music degrees:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music – Jazz Studies
  • Bachelor of Science in Music Education
  • Bachelor of Arts in Music – Applied Music or Music Theory

Under the direction of Dr. Gloria Cooper, our Vocal Jazz Studies Department offers aspiring vocalists the opportunity to receive the training needed to hone their talent for the professional stage. Students will be given the unique opportunity to perform in the LIU Vocal Jazz Ensemble as well as in solo settings, which will enable them to develop the skills necessary to be competitive on today’s music scene.

The Instrumental Jazz Studies Department, directed by saxophonist Sam Newsome, offers students looking to explore their creative side a chance to study and perform a wide range of musical styles such as mainstream jazz, free improvisation, world music, and other contemporary musical genres.

For information about our music program, please contact our department chair, Professor Robert Aquino at 718-488-1668 or visit our website at: www.brooklyn.liu.edu/music
