The Long Island University Brooklyn Campus Library Media Center Newsletter

We love movies, among other things.

January 2009, issue 41

"But trying to remember a dream is like, how shall I put it, being out at night in a thunder-storm. There's a flash of lightning, and for one brief moment everything stands out, vivid and startling."  --Walter Craig (Mervyn Johns), Dead of Night (1945).

Happy New Year

And welcome to the Spring Semester, Blackbirds.  Here's hoping the New Year treats us all better than the last one did.

It was a rough year in a lot of ways, but there were some good things about 2008.  Let us not forget Johan Santana and Barack Obama, not necessarily in that order.  Also, your friendly neighborhood Media Center continued to add a host of notable titles to our collections, and also began in earnest to improve our collections by acquiring many of our most popular titles in DVD format.  The Library Acquisitions Department has worked diligently and systematically to make this possible, and we thank them.

But you, faithful reader and Friend of the Media Center, don't care about all that behind-the-scenes rigamarole; you just want to know what kinds of cool things came our way in the last year.  Let me hit you with a handful of purely random highlights from the more than 340 DVDs acquired in 2008 (including both new titles and upgrades from VHS).  Click on the titles for full info:

This is just a sample, but as you can tell even just from the titles, in an election year our acquisitions were heavy on politics, particularly on the policies of the Bush years.  But you will also find mainstream Hollywood films, independent features, classics, and foreign films.  Our holdings in contemporary Asian, African and Italian films improved markedly, for example, as did our holdings in Film Noir.  So come up and see us.  And speaking of what you should see...
