Library Guide 3: Literary Criticism

Literary criticism includes explanations and evaluations of the works of individual authors, and discussions of literary theories, genres, movements or a country's literature. To locate books or journals containing literary criticism, search the library catalog or online databases using the relevant subject headings or keywords. For further assistance, ask a Reference Librarian.

Library Catalog

  • Criticism on an individual author and his or her work can be found under the author's name. For example:

    Conrad, Joseph, 1857-1924--Criticism and Interpretation
    Dickinson, Emily, 1830-1886--Criticism and Interpretation
    Shakespeare, William, 1564-1616. Hamlet

  • Criticism on a country's literature or nationality can be found under the name of that country or nationality. One can also search by time period. For example:

    Literature Resource Center - LRC Gale InfoTrac
    Access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline. Combining Gale Group's core literary databases in a single online service, the Literature Resource Center covers more than 120,000 novelists, poets, essayists, journalists, and other writers, with coverage of 2,500 of the most-studied authors.
    Literature Online (LION) ProQuest-Chadwyck
    Contains the full text of over 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama, prose fiction, and literary theory produced from the tenth century to the present day (including works from Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, India, and the Caribbean), as well as the King James Bible.
    MLA International Bibliography ProQuest-Chadwyck
    The MLA International Bibliography is an index of scholarly books and articles on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics which has been compiled by the Modern Language Association of America since 1926. The electronic version includes the Bibliography's entire print run, and currently contains more than 2 million records. In addition, the MLA Directory of Periodicals gives full information on over 7,100 journals and book series.
    MagillonLiterature Plus Ebsco
    Contains the full text of over 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama, prose fiction, and literary theory produced from the tenth century to the present day (including works from Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, India, and the Caribbean), as well as the King James Bible.
    Twayne's Authors Series (Gale InfoTrac via NOVEL)
    Twayne World, US, and English Authors each contains the full text of 200 frequently used Twayne Literary Masters books on individual World, US, or English authors, for a total of 600 individual full-text titles.
