Back to Conference Participants Abstract: Brooklyn's Waterfront Workers

The paper will discuss the divergent ethnic and racial groups of longshoremen; the job of loading and unloading along the waterfront; the influence of gangsters, particularly the Anastasia brothers; and how labor priests and communists attempted to improve the working and living conditions of the longshoremen and their families. The research incorporates oral history, and written sources from Catholic Labor Schools (Fordham University), the Library of Congress, the National Archives, union publications (Tamiment Institute-NYU), and newspapers.
