Asthma Control Test:

The University Health and Medical Services Health (UHMS) and the School of Health Profession's Brenda Pillors Asthma Education Program are partnering to bring asthma-related services to LIU students and staff. The Health and Medical Services now has the ability to monitor your asthma control via the Asthma Control Test (ACT). This is a brief written questionnaire that measures how well your asthma is controlled. Those whose asthma is not well controlled or very poorly controlled will be offered a cost free referral to the Brenda Pillors Asthma Education Program here at LIU. A certified asthma educator will assist you in the self-management of your asthma. We are developing a procedure to help identify those who may have asthma-like symptoms using a questionnaire and a simple breathing test (spirometry). A UHMS physician will interpret your tests and advise you on treatment options. Survey have been available on-site since March 1, 2010.

Long Island University recently received a grant (>$1 million) from the National Institutes of Health by that provides funds for LIU students to conduct biomedical research in labs at LU, Columbia University, NYU, Mt Sinai School of Medicine, Albert Einstein School of Medicine,  and UMDNJ/Rutgers.   Besides the research training, the grant provides a variety of enrichment activities including the funding of a seminar series.  Although the program focuses on the development of students for preparation for research careers, we look to prepare students (indirectly) for clinically related settings.   As such, we are collaborating with University Health and Medical Services (UHMS) to develop a speaker series that will bridge the clinical and investigatory (research) aspects of the profession.  These seminars are open to the entire university community.
